NTFRS to DFS-R
JBP 10.07.2007 15:56:03
We have all together 4 servers, apart from these 2 servers are in main office
and rest of the 2 servers are on two different remote offices.

I have all together more then 150 DFS Links and apart from that around 25
links replicating data between servers with custom replication topology 24/7.

Explanation: Total 4 servers, 150 DFS Links, 25 DFS Link Targets use NTFRS
to replicate data, Replication topology is custom,

SrvMain1 SrvMain2 SrvRemote1 SrvRemote2
DFS Link Targets 150 150 2 3
Enable Replication 25 25 2 3

SrvRemote1 is replicating both the Link Targets to both the main office
servers with two outgoing connections and both the main office servers
replicating back to SrvRemote1 server for same two Link Targets. Total 4
connections for each DFS Link Target 2 are outgoing and 2 are incoming.

Same true with SrvRemote2 for 3 Link Targets.

SrvRemote1 and SrvRemote2 are domain controllers but not replicating
anything with each other for DFS.

SrvMain1 and SrvMain2 replicating DFS Link Targets for 20 links each other
with one outgoing and one incoming connection for each link targets. In short
both are mirror coping each other 24/7.

Questions:
As per my understanding with DFS-R, if I upgrade to in place it will create
25 Replication Groups, 25 folder targets on SrvMain1 and 2 servers, 2 folder
targets on SrvRemote1 and 3 folder targets of SrvRemote2 servers. As per
formula calculation
SrvMain1 25*50=1250
SrvMain2 25*50=1250
SrvRemote1 2*4=8
SrvRemote2 3*4=12
Is this right? If not please explain me.

As there is a limit of 1024 for formula how can I reduce for both the main
servers?

Is there any way to limit active connections?
I mean, we have two main folders on both the main office servers and which
has most of the DFS Link target with replication enable.
1) UsrFolders DFS Link for NTFRS Replication
(For all the user’s data and has around 750 folders after it and at present
it has total 715,000 files and 50,000 folders with total 315GB data)

2) DeptData (For all the department and has 10 folders after it and at
present it has total 315,000 files and 30,000 folders with total 303GB data)
Dept1 DFS Link for NTFRS Replication
Dept2 DFS Link for NTFRS Replication
Dept3 DFS Link for NTFRS Replication
After upgradation to R2, if I move replication from each Department link to
main folder what will be impact on DFS-R? I know that it will decrease the
formula limit to half and comes around 600 but how it is going to impact on
replication? If I remove replication for each department DFS link and enable
DFS-R for main folder for all the departments, it will reduce 10 replicated
folders with 20 connections so reduce 10*20=200.

What is the data size and file/folder limit for each replicated folder in
DFS-R?

I already go through most of the support and blogs articles so please give
me your ideal answer what would you do in this case.

Thanks,
JB
