I'm trying to set up a home wireless network. I'm running Windows Vista on my main computer and XP on my laptop. The router is a D-Link DI-524. My problem is that when I try to run the network wizard on the main computer I get an error message. It says that IP address 192.168.0.1 is in use and is needed to complete the install. That address is the one for the router and I was wondering if there is a way of changing the router address or if anyone has a workaround for this situation. Thanks for viewing.... Scott.>

You change the IP address of the router through the router's software.
You need to determine which of the two computers is using this address. That ought to be easy though.

Hi Check the computer's IPs might be that one of them has a static IP that is the same as the Router's core IP. If it is so , change the computer's IP. Jack (MVP-Networking).

Scott,
Can you tell us a little more about how the network is physically setup? <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html
What setting are you making in the network wizard? Why is IP address 192.168.0.1 relevant? You can always change the router IP address, if necessary, but maybe you ought to review what you're setting up first.

Thanks folks, for your replies. I have successfully changed the router ip address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.105. This solved part of my problem. The reason for changing the router LAN IP was that the wizard was saying that it needed 192.168.0.1 in order to set up the LAN. The wizard error message mentioned the IP situation before I changed the address. I have no problem accessing the internet on any of my home network computers. When I run the network wizard to try to get files and printers shared the wizard stops with an error message saying it can't complete the request. For the record I'm using Vista Enterprise on my main rig. It connects to the internet through a D-link DI-524 unsecured wireless network. My laptop and one other computer are using XP home. The last computer is running XP Pro. They all use the same network. I'll keep plugging away at it. If anyone has suggestions please reply. Thanks again... Scott.>

Scott,
You say "This solved part of my problem.". What part of the problem remains to be solved?
Maybe if you would publish the logs from "ipconfig /all" for each computer, we'd get some idea what you are doing. We'd be glad to make suggestions, but we need details.

The main computer shows up on the home network but I still have to set up my rights to access it. It says 'network path not found' and 'you might not have permission to use this network resource'. Still no trace of the laptop on the main computer. Here are the ip files for the rigs. Main computer...

It's a start, Scott.
Both computers are using Broadcast name resolution ("Hybrid"). This requires SMB broadcast for name resolution. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html
SMBs have 2 known problems here. Firstly, IPV6. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html
Secondly, nVidia nForce Networking. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html
