Unable to Ping WXP Machine on LAN
y2kdad <atulg65[ at ]gmail.com> 27.06.2007 23:10:45
I have two PCs on the same LAN. One is Windows 2K and the other WXP
Pro. I can "see" the WXP box through Network Neighborhood, but I
CANNOT PING it, either by hostname or IP address.

I CAN PING the W2K machine from the WXP Machine. Firewall is disabled
on the WXP machine and there is no third party application running.

NETBIOS over TCP-IP is enabled and Computer browser service is running
on BOTH machines.

If I share a folder on the WXP machine and try to connect to the share
through a UNC path, I get a "Path not found". If I click on the WXP
machine in Network Neighborhood, I get an "Access denied" message.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for your time.

Start the WXP machine in "Safe mode with networking" and see if you
can ping it and access it through Network Neighborhood.. If you can,
it's possible that a firewall program on WXP is blocking access in
normal mode, even when the firewall is disabled. ZoneAlarm and Norton
products have been known to do that.
