Ran Network Setup Wiz. a dozen times - each time it said success, but no shared folders on remote computer. My Computer shows network drives. Right click on network drive>Properties has a greyed-out type-in box that I can't type in (although the cursor is blinking in it). Type: Disconnected Network Drive File System: RAW Used space: 0 bytes 0 bytes Free Space: 0 bytes 0 bytes Capacity; 0 bytes 0bytes Left click produces an error msg: "Windows\An error occurred while reconnecting Z: to xxx\C-SHARE
Microsoft Windows Network: The network connection cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help.
This connection has not been restored."
Windows Help isn't much help. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Ric

Many times network connections need the same user account on both machines. Also see if there might be some sharing properties with those folders requiring certain User Group membership.

Yes, John, thanks for the reply. Sometimes it seems that the amount of replies to a question is in inverse proportion to the amount of work a poster has done, prior to posting, trying to solve the problem on their own.
I did think that permissions had maybe been altered, although I never got an "Access Denied" message. I don't know how to check this out fully. The remote computer is old - runs Win98 (years ago I bought some expensive software that I still like to use, but it won't run on XP, so I networked the old computer and ran it on the network. This approach worked for 4 years, then suddenly stopped)- I don't think Win98 (FAT16)folders and files have permissions (Maybe they do, but I don't know how to find them or change them). I ran cacls on every shared file and folder I could think of on the XP machine without result. Administrators have full access to all of them and, although I have different User names on each machine, I am administrator on both. The Win98 machine has no user Guest accounts - everybody logs on as administrator.
I'm about ready to wipe the HD and do a complete re-install, but I'm scared that whatever snuck in past Norton is in a mpeg, jpeg, pdf, or whatever and will therefore get saved and transferred and still be there when I'm done.
What makes network drives fail to connect?
Norton regularly reports that it has blocked an intrusion attempt. Many times the attacking address is private and close. It's easy to find the IP address of the XP machine - it's right there in My Network Places. Anybody know how to get the IP address of a Win98 machine on a network? I sometimes think that Norton is blocking the network, but disabling it doesn't make the network come back. I can't snoop it out, so I can't be sure.
I gotta go to bed - Tomorrow's coming, and this thing's takin up too much of my time. Any posts welcome.
Hoping somebody can help me out here, before I gotta spend a bunch of money and join the 21st. century.
Thank, Ric

It's not permissions as much as having the same user name/pw on both machines. Also disable any firewall until you get it working. Allowing NetBIOS over TCIP is a must.

Can you clarify that this is the Windows XP machine trying to connect to the 98 machine?
