Compatibility With WMP12 and On?
"Nicholas" <[ at ]> 22.05.2007 11:14:11
Can users of PMC expect compatibility with future releases of Windows Media
Player? Can the devices just download new codecs such as WMA10 and continue
to sync well into the future?

Although I have never owned one of these devices, I do think they are great
in their concept.

I do think MS might need a to have a little more commitment in their
projects ESPECIALLY those which involve significant investments from their
OEM partners. I'm not trying to be critical but don't you think OEMs suffer
the most from these project withdrawals from MS?

From Smart Displays to SPOT watches to HighM.A.T. (does anyone even remember
this technology?), PlaysForSure, and now PMC, MS continues to launch great
innovations. HOWEVER, a little more effective marketing will do a lot to
ensure the continued survival of the projects and revenue for OEMs. It might
encourage them to join new projects rather than discourage, which seems like
the case now.

Given that the PMC has been discontinued, I wouldn't expect much more than
what is presently available.

Actually that info is in the post just below this. I focused in on the
comment -
"As part of the ongoing review of our product investments, we have decided
to take what we have learned from our investments in Portable Media Center
and focus our product and marketing resources on building media experiences
on connected Windows Mobile powered devices."

I certainly haven't seen that happening. What I did see them learn is that
the money is not in the hardware, but in the music service. I have a PMC and
a Zune and don't see any radical improvements or even innovations, in the
platform, save some things that are simply technology progress related. What
I do see is the in-house music service and dedicated software baggage that
comes with it. I didn't have to deal with that on the PMC. Somehow it
managed to work with what I already had.

Ever the optimist though, I am looking forward to the Portable Media Center
inspired media experience on my Windows Mobile Devices.
