Can't say I have heard of that before, beyond it being an issue with the files you are trying to play. Do you get the normal sounds from the device, alerts, button clicks, etc. Check the sound control panel to make sure you haven't selected a silent profile, since you say you have a phone.
One other point is that you will get much better responses in a group that actually deals with Windows Mobile Smartphones or Pocket Media Player. Those would be microsoft.public.pocketpc.multimedia or microsoft.public.smartphone. This group deals with the MS Portable Media Center, such as the ones produced by iRiver. They are little Media Center devices that do video and audio with an MCE like interface. They have also been pretty much discontinued, and this group isn't well attended.
