how do you skip the ir part of the setup? i was trying to use composite from
my camcorder , to show home movies on my laptop.
you'd think that media center would do anything that you are inputing in to
it.

You can't. If you're using anything other than a straight coax or Digital
Cable Tuner connection, MCE expects to see some type of hardware to control
the external set top box. MCE was not intended to capture video from a
camcorder or VCR. Programs such as Movie Maker and others will do this, but
the MCE services running in the background can interfere with this.

And quite honestly, I don't know why one would want to capture such content
to dvr-ms....
