Figure captions on top of figures in a specific style
I want to create figure captions that reside ABOVE my figures, in 10 pt
Arial. They need to have the format Figure 3-2, where 3 is the current
chapter number, and 2 is the figure number, followed by my caption
text. They also need to show up in my table of figures. I need this
to be in a style. When I try this, the following bad things happen:
-The figure caption shows up in the wrong p...

Referring to an item in a numbered list
In a numbered list, I have to refer back to a previous item...for example:
item 12 contains a phrase that reads "see item #3". I created the number in
the "see item #..." phrase by inserting a cross-reference to item 3.
However, if I insert a new item near the top of the list, so that number 3
is now number 4, my cross-reference still points to number 3. In other
words, the cross-reference a...

Outline Numbering Adds Unwanted Numbers
I have been adding outline numbering to selected paragraphs in a table. I
have been using the indent text tool bar button to change from a "1)" to an
"a)". Suddenly everytime I choose to add numbering to selected text, numbers
get added to every row of text in the entire document. I can "Undo" and all
the numbers disappear except for the one that I want. My 500K document grew
into a ...

Keeping numbered lists w/out autonumber
I've been using the autonumber function for a list, and I'd like to
disable the autonumber but keep the numbers in place. Basically, I am
trying to find a way to be able to add something to a numbered list
without having the program immediately renumber the new entry (ie:
1. text
text
2. text
instead of:
1. text
2.
3. text
I've figured out that if I click return twice it gets rid of t...

Page numbering ina merge document
Hi folks.
Tried to work out how to do this but can't. Perhaps one of you can
help. :)
Document is a single page merge with 6 records on it that are taken
from an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has several hundred records
in it and the record count varies.
In the footer is Page x of y. When you "merge to print", each page is
printed correctly but with page 1 of 1 in the footer, rat...

Numbering and styles
I have a style that I have automatically numbering sentences. Works great.
Now I'm ready to go to the next section, but I need the numbers to now jump
from the 1k's to the 2ks.
(section 1 is 1000 to 1300, section 2 is 2000 to 2405, section 3 is 3000 to
3604)
When I try to break the section (continuous) then tell it that I want the
numbers to restart with 2k, all of my 1k numbers ch...

Numbered/lettered lists in a table
I am formatting a numbered & lettered list of headings in a multi-page table.
Question # 1: As I go to my next page, if my heading is continued from a
previous page (we’ll say with the heading of “G. Resourcesâ€), and I want the
same heading on the next page (of “G. Resources – (Continued)), how do I
keep the letter t stay at G? If I select the restarting, it goes to A. ...

Re: Creating An Auto-numbering List
I'm currently trying to create a document which is like a book in which I
have a Contents page with the different sections labelled 1., 1.1., 1.2, 2,
2.1, 2.2. and so on up to 10.2.
In the body of the document I want to create an auto-numbering list so I
don't have to manually type 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on, and also want to create
a table of contents which will automatically update any c...

problem with indexing
In Word 2003 I have 20 chapters (files) that I have marked with a lot of
index items, however when I make a master document to create the overall
index, some of the page numbers of the index are incorrect. After much
effort trying to figure this out, I discovered that when the index is
created, Word is expanding the index references and in some cases where I
have several indexed items...

mixed outline numbering with and without headings
Dear Colleagues,
I am creating a document that requires outline numbering, sometimes
with headings and sometimes with normal text only. For example:
1 Heading 1
2 Heading 1
2.1 Heading 2
2.1.1 lorum ipsum blah blah blah
2.1.2 lorum ipsum blah blah blah
2.2 Heading 2
2.2.1 Heading 3
2.2.1 Heading 3

removing listnum field names
Hi,
I want to remove the names I gave to some outline numbering list templates
(as entered in the "ListNum field list name" field in the Customize dialog
box). It seems that to do this I need to open the list templates concerned.
However, the Bullets and Numbering dialog box only shows the last seven
templates that a user dabbles with and the names I am looking for are not

Multiple Page Numbers on One Page
If this is a repeat, sorry. I got an error when I tried to post so I don't
know if it went through or not ...
Anyways, I've been requested to create a template that has more than one
page set on a page. For instance, I'm on Page 6 of a 150-page document.
Page 6 through 12 are Attachment 1. The header would look like this:

Attachment 1, Page 1 of 6

Problems with Outline Numbering using styles
Having struggled to get this working reliably via Google I found Shauna
Kelly's FAQ on how to create heading numbering and followed her
instructions very carefully. No joy!
I have two problems
1. In the Outline Numbering Dialog box I get garbled numbers for some
levels in the Number Format and Preview boxes. The sort of effect I
see here is 11.1.1..1 for (say) level 5. The level at w...

Section break insert changes sequential numbers
To change a header in a 350-page sequentially numbered college catalog, I
inserted a section break at the bottom of 134. Page 135 became 128.
This protected document has been edited by five different reviewers numerous
times. Final version is MS Office XP Professional.
Taking the cue from the posting on corrupted files, I copied everything but
the last paragraph into a new document. ...

Odd characters show up in between number and text on primary numbered paragraphs
I have run into this on several occasions where I have numbered paragraphs
and then on some machines there appears to be some garbage characters
between the number and the first text of the paragraph.
I've got a section of a document like the following:
1. ÇÇÇ Definitions
1.1 "First item"
1.2 "Second item"
2. ÇÇÇ Next Main Point
Everything that's indented (1.1, 1.2, 2.x etc...

Deleting ONE page number
I am trying to delete ONE page number on a Word 2003 document but every time

that I am working on and that person is no longer here for me to ask them
about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

How do I set up numbered headings easily
==intro==
Most of the documents that I've read at my company are entirely written
using the style "Header". (Yes, that's "Header" not "Heading".) Since these
are operating procedure and work instruction documents, I thought they could
be reformated with Styles (so I can enable Outline view) and insert Table of
Contents for the larger documents. Unfortunately, thier numbering system is ...
