Change default table of contents linked styles and styles
By default, a style-based TOC uses styles Heading 1, Heading 2, and
Heading 3. The TOC levels can be changed to link to any arbitrary
style under the "options" menu. Is there any way to make that change
permanent, for example, in a template? I haven't been able to figure
out anyway to avoid linking the TOC to my desired header styles each
time I create a new TOC in a new document.

When to split a long document into separate files?
Hi there,
I have some doubts about whether to split a long document that I'm
writing at the moment into separate files.
From what size, and maybe, for what type of content, is it worth to
separate a word document into separate files? for example: one file for
each chapter.
The type of document I'm writing will be about 300 pages; with lots of
figures, which I insert inline and li...

Removing a horizontal line in Word xp sp3
I have apparently autoformated a horizontal line across my doc that
stubbornly refuses to be deleted.
I wanted only to put double dashes part way across the page but it
expanded from margin to margin and I can't figure out how to removef
it.
Can someone please tell me how to get rid of it and what to set so
that I don't do it again?
TIA...

Outlines From Word 2003
I created a two page sheet of text in Outline View. When I checked Print
Preview, my outline was gone.
I've never had much success controlling outlines over the past 20 years I've
been using Word. I thought I could just go to Format/Styles and Format and
set everything straight. Sure doesn't look like it.
Can someone give me a quick pointer on turning what I see in Outline View...

Large Document Creation
We have created a program in VB & VBA that assists users in creating midsize
documents daily. There will be one file for each day anywhere from 3-25
pages in length. We need to combine these documents once a year into one
large file to be published into a book. The document is straight text. No
images. In the end it will be approximately 1500-2000 pages in length
including table of ...

Hidden text won't stick
I am using Word 2002 and a later version of word. Both are on
Win XP machines, and both have the same problem. It's important that I find
a solution because it affects a lot of documents.
I am a teacher, working with other teachers; and I am making up
a homework book to be used by several teachers. The homework book has 2
basic styles: 1. "Numbered question" ...

Managing Long Documents
Is there anything I can do to make it easier to scroll within large
documents?
I have a very large document that I am trying to edit in Word. By large, I
mean 1077 pages.
I've only just loaded the document into word but I'm finding it takes a very
long time to scroll up and down with the document; I can click the up or
down arrow on the slider and go away for 10 or 15 minutes only to fin...

Is this possible? If so, what commands do I use?
Thanks,

Comments for the last sentence in a page
Hi,
I am using MS Word 2000 and every time I try to insert a comment for
the sentence which ends at the end of a page, the comment baloon
appears on the top of the next page.
Can anyone help me to figure it out? I would like it to appear as any
other comment, on the right-hand side of the text. I checked Options in
the Tools menu and adjusted margins but nothing helped.

Endnote numbering at section breaks
I want my endnotes to begin at "1" at each section break, but each time I set
it up that way, it does go 1,2,3, for a while but then suddenly "bounces
back" to continue the numbering from the previous section. I don't
understand why this is happening.
Also I find that when I set "Section Break, Next Page," that doesn't remain
for very long. The next time I look it has somehow got mys...

cross-references and hyperlinks
Greetings. Does anyone here know how to change the font style Word uses for
cross-references?
I want my cross-references to have the appearance of hyperlinks, so that my
readers know they can Ctrl+click them to get to the cross-referenced
location.
Potential solutions I've tried and why they don't work for me:
1. Use actual hyperlinks: These don't give me the benefit of updated

cross-referencing in callouts
Greetings! Has anyone here found a way to get cross-references in call-outs
to update when all document cross-references are updated?

sections with further details from within the callouts. This seemed very

Best way to add graphics and tables in a document
Hi folks...
I have a 300-page Word 2003 document (master with about a dozen
subdocuments), in which so far I have been putting text only, to avoid
messing around with pictures, text boxes and the like. However, a point
is coming at which I will need to add tens of such objects and would
like to do it properly.
In smaller documents, I have used text boxes and (as of Word 2003)
drawing pa...

Capture styles & formatting list
I use the styles & formatting pane quite often when formatting my long
documents. Is there a way I can capture the entire task pane list so I can
print it separately? Similar to swiping all the entries in the task pane and
copy/paste elsewhere. Can't swipe/select all the entries. Any thoughts?
Thanks!...

Bizarre Word 2002 SP3 problems
I've been formatting a long doc for a while now. Recently, I've
started having bizarre (to me) problems. I don't know whether I've
unwittingly caused them or if an update caused:
1. All of a sudden my Tools menu changed. Options no longer appeared.
I had to dig it out under customization and pull it up on the toolbar
where it sits next to Tools now. There have probably been other
changes t...

Horrible, just Horrible! (Attn: Mr. Kenyon) Word 2003 mucks up my 2000 files!
OK folks. I'm using Word 2000 and I'm a happy camper. The school

school's computers, all hell breaks loose. Of course, I have to put

have not turned off automatic formatting, have not turned...

How to repair a broken link to template.
I have many documents created from a public folder template that
contains styles and keyboard macros. Therefore whenever I open one of the

network changes the name of a folder in the path to the template, however,
the link is broken and I can't use the macros. I need the documents and the
template to remain public, ...

Word 2003 messes up my page numbering
I use Word 2000. I saved a document onto my USB drive. I went to
school, plugged in the USB, and opened the document. The school
computers have Word 2003 on them. I worked on the document. When it
was finished, I inserted page numbers into the footer. Instead of
numbering the pages from 1-207, it started each section over again.
I'm not sure if it started renumbering each time it got to...
