Spell check won't work in particular documents
Bill Angell 13.09.2006 04:32:02
My wife and I both use Word 2003.

We have our Word programs set up to spell check as we type and to auto
correct. Spell checking and auto correct work on all new documents.
Everything worked well until we discovered this problem.

One of my wife's students pointed out that a word document that my wife
created using a copy and paste technique from an older document would not
allow any spell checking. Neither the auto correct, auto spell check or even
choosing Spelling and Grammar would find a misspelled word that had been
added. We merely get the message "The Spelling and Grammar check is
complete" but none of the misspelled words like "spel" and "adn" were caught.

It does the same thing with that document on my computer and the technical
support computer gurus at the university are stumpped as well. It seems to
not make sense since spell checking is a function of the Word program and not
usually of the document.

I don't know how to post an attachment but if requested, I will be glad to
e-mail the document that can't be spell checked.

I need to know the following:
1. How do we correct this and similar documents that somehow have spell
checking disabled?
2. How do we prevent creating files that cannot be spell checked in the
first place?

I get a lot of junk e-mail at my posted e-mail address so please title your
e-mails "Send word attachment" and I will gladly reply with a copy of the
offending document.

I appreciate any and all comments.

We have the latest Windows updates and Word updates. My wife uses McAffee
virus protection and I use Norton Internet Security.

Thanks,

In the Tips section of my website you'll find an article that describes how
language formatting (spelling is based on language) functions in Word. It's a
rather complex process...

In this particular case, I suggest you Ctrl+A (select all the text), then go to
Tools/Language/Set language. Make sure the language you want to spell check is
marked AND that the "Do not check spelling or grammar" checkbox is NOT
activated.

Cindy,

Your answer was right on target and I rate it a 10 out of a possible 10.

I indicated that the answer did answer the question but I couldn't figure
out how to actually "rate" your response as I am a novice at newsgroups.

I have saved both of the web sites you provided as favorites to help resolve
any other problems we might encounter.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for letting me know the suggestion worked :-) And don't worry about
figuring out the "ratings" - I don't. Important thing is that the
information helped!

(FWIW I don't know how or where "ratings" can be done in the web interface.
I use software that lets me download all the messages onto my computer. I
read/answer them off-line, in an application that's a lot faster than using
a browser, then upload them in batches.)
