Never try to save directly from Word to any removable media. That includes memory sticks, floppies, CD-RWs, Zip disks, etc.
Always save to the hard drive, close the document, and then copy it to the removable media. The same goes for opening a document to edit it -- first copy it to the hard drive, and work on it there.
Ignoring this advice, even when it seems to work, risks corrupting the document, and sometimes the whole drive.
