word 2003 slow start, or no start on fresh i
ooman 30.09.2006 15:46:02
I had a recent system failure so decided to take the opportunity to get a new
hard drive and a fresh start.

After loading Office 2003 everything was fine until I tried Word.

An error message stated that Word failed to start last time, and then starts
me in safe mode. After I close it, the next time I start Word it starts
right away, but any subsequent start takes about 4 minutes to start.

I've renamed Normal.dot to normal.old and it will start right away the next
run, but after that it goes back to the safe mode start, or the 4 minute
delay start. From what I can tell there haven't been any new macros,
although I did install winfax, but I don't think it ran any macros, at least
I can't find any.

Sometimes after it does start I get another message: "com
error.\OfficeAddin.cpp line 220 (232)
Code=88a01a8

I also ran a virus check, clean.

Definitely the WinFax add-in is most certainly at fault. See the following
document for a guide on how to troubleshoot these problems:

I've removed winfax, and all files I could find associated with it. I also
removed Word. I then use a reg cleaner.

The I reloaded Word from the CD. It ran fine the first time, but on the
second run it again took 3 - 4 minutes before it fully loaded. Eventually it
did load, but it just tokk a loooooongggg time.

What other things should I be loking at?

Thanks!

Yes I read the article and folowed every step.

Before I did that I removed winfax and all traces of it I could find.

Then I followed each step.

It did start right up for a few times, but then fell back into the "safe
mode" and 4 minute delay.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Thanks.

Delete and reinstall the printer making sure it is the latest driver.
Rename normal.dot as normal.old making sure that you only have ONE
normal.dot by searching from Explorer.
Go to Word Startup folder (Programme File, Microsoft Office) and make sure
it is empty.
Start Word and run Detect and Repair from the Help menu.
