Why does Office XP Word and Powerpoint crash when I open a doc
wiloway 18.09.2006 18:12:01
I have just reloaded my System with Windows XP Pro and SP2 ... I then
reloaded my Micorsoft Office XP Professional Subscription version 2002,
followed the activation procedure, and downloaded all the updates and service
packs and everytime I open a Word document or a Powerpoint document, it
returns a splash that states "I'm sorry Microsoft office has encountered an
error and must close" ... the error reported is in the winword.exe module
.... it then asks me if I want to file an error report, which I do ... and it
tells me to follow the link to see what Microsoft thinks is the error ... and
it tells me to download the updates which I already have ... so I scan for
updates again and it tells me that I already did that ... and I have repeated
this procedure ... removing office from the system ... cleaning the registry
.... removing the folders from Programs ... and reinstalling it 5 times ...
Help

I want to be able to run the Software I bought and paid for

Problems with Word crashing usually are due to corrupted registry entries or
a corrupted normal.dot. I would try the steps shown here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

In particular, see if starting Word using the /a switch allows it to start
without crashing.

If all else fails, I would try creating a new user profile and see if a
completely pristine profile eliminates the problem (Start - Settings -
Control Panel - User Accounts).

Herb ... Thanks ... Very informative response ... unfortunately none of it
helped ... I am so frustrated ... it is really annoying to have software that
you cannot use ...

thanks again

anyone else want to try???

If you are on a network..try creating a new profile. log on as the
local admin account and move your profile to the root of C: and then
log on as you and rebuild your profile and try it again.

Would you confirm that when you start in Safe Mode, Word still aborts. From
Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. What happens?

wiloway 22.09.2006 02:35:02
That is correct ... it appears to be fine and stable until I open a document
.... then about 30 seconds later it displays the "encountered and error and
must close" ... same as when I click on a document and it opens Word ... or
when I open word and then open a document ... or when I open a powerpoint
file ... however, ... when I open a blank document I can paste information
into the document and save and close the document before it crashes ...

What happens if you start Word in Safe mode? Hold down the Ctrl key when
Word is starting, and say Yes to Safe Mode. Safe mode isn't the same as
starting with the /a switch.

The description sounds like a problem with the printer or printer driver.
Check that you have the latest printer driver installed and that Word can
see the printer correctly.

Herb ... thanks again ... still no joy ... I created a new user account ...
removed all the normal.dot files (even the backup) ... same thing ... tried
the ctrl key and start in safe mode ... same thing ... think there is any
possibility of getting refund or new office software ... LOL ... getting
tired of not being able to use the software I bought ... and open source is
just not the same

Herb/TF/ncalmarin ... thank you all for your patience and assistance .. TF
hit it on the head when he counseled print drivers ... I have a Brother 1440
laser printer with unsigned drivers ... I went to the Brother Web site and
got their latest drivers ... usually DriversHQ picks that up ... but it no
longer seems to auto check the printer ... had to do it manually ... now
things are working as advertised ...

thanks again all
