What version of Word are you using? The term "AutoSave" was replaced in Word 97 with "AutoRecovery". Perhaps that's was the text used in the message?
In any event, AutoRecovery is "emergency use only" save and it's only used if the document isn't closed properly in the event of a crash/hang/etc. If you had been saving your file ever few minutes then it should still be there.
Now, it could be there was a problem during the Save process. Check the folder for the document and see if there is a temp file named something like ~wrd*.tmp. If you find one then try opening it in Word and see if it's your document.
