Save, Save As and AutoSave disabled (New or existing documents) Lugubrious 14.09.2006 21:21:02 Something I've never encountered: In the middle of writing, I got a message indicating that "AutoSave is postponed for Document XXX." I thought this was fine since I was Cntl-S saving every few minutes. After about 6 hours of the "postponed" message popping up, I tried to Save As. No "Save As" box came up. When I tried to close the document (thinking that it had been saved all along by use of Cntl-S), Word asked if I wanted to Save the document. I selected "Yes," and then tried to close the document, but was asked again if I wanted to save. I finally closed it without saving, and the temp file on the document was last modified (saved) just before I started getting the AutoSave message. Essentially, the document is lost. I've since tried opening a blank document and after typing a few words, I try to save. Nothing. Autosave is selected in the Options tab, but all save functionality is lost. Virus scans and Ad-Aware scans are negative. Any ideas? Thanks all.

The term "AutoSave" was replaced in Word 97 with "AutoRecovery". Perhaps that's was the text used in the message? In any event, AutoRecovery is "emergency use only" save and it's only used if the document isn't closed properly in the event of a crash/hang/etc. If you had been saving your file ever few minutes then it should still be there. Now, it could be there was a problem during the Save process. Check the folder for the document and see if there is a temp file named something like ~wrd*.tmp. If you find one then try opening it in Word and see if it's your document. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup.
