Despite the advice that Microsoft typically gives on this issue, you should not be using import/export for the purpose of moving Outlook data to a new machine. For one thing, .PST is Outlook's native file format, so there is no need to "import" from a .PST file -- just like you wouldn't import from a ..DOC file into Word. Also, as you have noticed, things tend to get messed up and/or lost during the import/export process.
See http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm for a very good article on this subject and the best way to move your data.
