Thanks Josiah. I went to www.infopathdev.com and searched -- a 255-character limitation is mentioned for fields in forms linked to Access dbs, so I'm guessing the limitation also applies for fields promoted to SharePoint. I took your advice and posted my question to the MS SharePoint community.
