This button is still the default in versions up to Word 2003, which I assume is what you're discussing, since Word 2007 doesn't have the same kind of menu/toolbar structure. If you no longer have that button, add it back via Tools | Customize (see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToToolbar.htm). The command you want (under All Commands) is TableInsertGeneral.
