Go to Format | Columns and click on the preset picture for One. This will check the box for "Equal column width." OK out. This should solve your problem in the current document. To fix it for all new documents, you'll need to do this in Normal.dot; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm
