Unwanted Column Break
JenniferB 21.09.2006 17:49:02
I am 11 pages into a document using two columns. Without changing margins or
adding a break, my columns now only extend half way down the page. I can
find no reason why this is happening and I can't fix it. Can anyone help me??
RE: Unwanted Column Break
Rae Drysdale 21.09.2006 18:05:02
Turn on non-printing characters and see if it gives any information on what
is happening. Check page set up for margins. Are all pages in the document
ending at the same point, or from page 11?

There were no breaks or anything unusual when I displayed the non-printing
characters.
I also checked page set up and all the settings were accurate.
I did notice that on page 11, the second column does extend all the way to
the bottomof the page, it is only the first column that cuts off half way
down. I checked the setting and the columns are set to be identical, so
there is still no reason why this is happening (YET)!

Have you formatted this page independently? When selecting text and putting
in 2 columns there is a difference if there is a spare paragraph return at
the end. You either get two columns of equal depth on each side, or the first
column is long and the second is shorter. Did you try formatting the whole
document into 1 column and back to 2?

If the multi-column section ends with a (Continuous) section break, the
default is to balance the columns unless you disable this in the
Compatibility Options.

RE: Unwanted Column Break

The document was formatted for dual columns from page one, before any text
was written. I just kept progressing through the pages and all of a sudden
this break occurred. I have not changed any format settings since beginning
the document

I checked the compatibility option and it is not checked, so the columns
SHOULD be balancing

From your description ("my columns now only extend half way down the page"),
it sounded as if they *were* balancing (that is, that you wanted them to go
farther than halfway).

Re: Unwanted Column Break
JenniferB 21.09.2006 23:11:01

I began with a new document. Formatted it to have two columns. And then
began typing till Im at page 11 now. The first column clicks over to the
second column about half way down. The second column still extends all the
way sown the page. No format changes were ever done after the initial set up
on page one.
This is a manual for a software company so I can't have a big gaping hole on
the page.
I am so stumped. Nothing makes sense with this problem.

Check the paragraph formatting for "Keep with next" and "Keep lines
together," which in combination can force several paragraphs to the next
column (even "Widow/orphan control" combined with "Keep with next" can have
this effect if your paragraphs are short).

I checked those settings and the "Keep with next" and "Keep lines together"
boxes are not checked. Should I check them? The Widow/orphan control is
checked, but I donot know what that setting is for.

No, if they were checked that might be the cause of the problem.
"Widow/orphan control," which is enabled by default for all Word styles,
prevents a single line of a paragraph from becoming stranded at the top or
bottom of a page. If you like, send me your problem document (or a portion
of it exhibiting the problem), and I'll take a look.

Thank you somuch for all your help, however, due to confidentiality
