The difference is that Word interrogates the printer driver extensively as it uses printer metrics to layout the document page. Every printer uses different metrics. The usual reason for your problem is that Word cannot see the printer. Does this happen if you select the local printer as default and print to it? Check that the network printer AND driver are fully accessible to Word.
