The problem is evidently that Windows is trying to open .doc files as PDFs.
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm for instructions
on "reregistering" Word, which will reestablish its association with the
..doc and .dot file types in the Registry.
