Hi all.
Most of my question have been well answered here (thanks Jay, Cindy et al) but one remains.
*Sometimes* during a spell check, where queried spellings usually show up in red (and grammatical ones in green), the queried spelling shows up in *black* for part of the document. Why, and what does this mean? (Word 2000)

Unfortunately, you didn't reply in the thread where I tried to discuss this with you. Are the documents where you see this coming from the same source as the other oddities you've been seeing?

Sorry about that. You've been such a help to me. To tell you the truth I haven't noticed but I think so. The one thing I *have* remembered is that this strange problem happens even after I have corrected the others (by CTRL-A, positively select spell language, etc.)

A few things to try, in order to narrow down if this is a damaged file, and what kind of damage:
Copy such a paragraph (including the paragraph mark) and paste into a new document. Do you still see the same behavior, or are all the "squiggles" red, now?
Copy the paragraph WITHOUT the paragraph mark, then proceed as above.
Copy the paragraph again, then use Edit/Paste Special and paste as plain text. I'd expect the squiggles to be red for sure, in this variation.

Cindy
I'm not sure how 'squiggles' got into this. I'm talking about Word's spellcheck showing up wrongly spelt words in black instead of the usual red (it still shows up its ideas on grammar in green).

"Squiggles" are the lines under the words that are red or green?

Haven't noticed this. I will look next time it happens. BTW, the reason why I allude to Word's 'ideas' on grammar is that they're often woefully wrong! Like all automated things, one must use the spellcheck with great caution. (sorry about the archaic 'one' that slipped out. When Prince Charles got married recently, rumour has it that when they got to the bit where the answer was 'I do', he replied 'one does'...)

I have no problems with "one", when not used as in your example <g>
FWIW, I keep the English grammar check deactivated and just use spell check. I keep the German one on, though :-)
