I would suggest reposting your question in a newsgroup which supports Word. This newsgroup is for a different program, the Office Pro database software Microsoft Access. Scroll down the list of subjects on the (admittedly confusing!) webpage and find one for Word.
Opening an Access97 database in Access2003 will give you a warning that you cannot make changes unless you convert. You can still convert back even if you do (provided you don't add anything new which didn't exist in 97).
