I know how to create the drop down in my template. However, when I go to
test the document, the drop down option is cumbersome. Shouldn't the category
selections automatically appear when I double click the newly created drop
down box?

Which version of Word are we talking about? And exactly which commands are you
using to insert the Dropdown in question?

Category selections? I think we may be talking about two different kinds of
drop-down menus.
