Initial Observations--Office 2007
Rick 09.07.2006 03:34:01
Installation and Initial look issues: I elected to install the 2007 version
while retaining the 2003 version so I had a fallback position if 2007 had
issues. The following issues were encountered during installation:

1) A “The following files must be closed window” popped up, with no files
displayed to close. I had MS Access 2003 open, so closed it and clicked
continue. The installation proceeded.
2) A dialogue window poppod up, indicating I had to put in my MS Office 2003
CD. I suspect this is because I was keeping my previous version of Office
installed, rather than replacing it (since the beta 2007 version drops dead
on Feb 1 2007…)
3) I was most concerned about MS Outlook since the 2007 version will stop
working in Feb 07 and I can’t afford to be shut down at this point. Also,
since Office 2003 was disabled in the installation, I needed to make sure the
PST file would still work on my notebook for when I go out of town with it.
When opening Outlook, a popup appeared indicating that a third party add in
would no longer work. The good news is that although Outlook is crashing
frequently, the PST file does seem interchangeable with the 2003 Office
version.
4) When replying to all and sending a response, Outlook crashed (error
report sent.)
5) When using Ctrl+D to delete a message in Outlook, the application crashed
again (error report sent.) This happens every time.
6) In MS Word, it looks like the “Normal View” has been eliminated. This is
a view I use most of the time as it shows styles on the left and is a clean
format
7) In MS Word, the View Zoom icon was not present. Tailoring the icon bar
area was not as intuitive as I had hoped. (Where do you right click?) I did
figure it out, but there was initially no blank space to click so I had to do
the click in the menu bar area. Finally found the zoom tool on the bottom
right corner, and also the ability to use SHFT + mouse wheel.
8) Where is the file print menu item to specify print to Adobe Acrobat or
change printers? An error occurred when I was trying to convert this file to
Adobe PDF (I am using Acrobat 6.0, which works with Word 2003). A popup
appeared indicating I would have to upgrade Adobe Acrobat to work with Office
2007.
Great—so once again, a Microsoft update forces me to upgrade other software
as well. Since my Office 2003 and Adobe 6.0 does everything I need it to do,
I am not likely to upgrade for fancier menus.
9) The ALT button showing shortcut keys is a great feature!
10) The border option for paragraphs was hard to find in the help files. I
eventually figured it out. The transition away from a “format” menu item will
be hard to get over. Also, I did not find a readily available border icon,
which was surprising since I use borders a lot.
11) Where is the File Save As option to specify a new directory or rename? I
had to add another icon to the Quick Access Toolbar, which is filling up fast!
12) The ability to use Word 2003 key shortcuts is helpful, but they do not
show up if you need to use them and forget where they reside.
13) I have set up Outlook to open the previous message when I close or
delete, but instead it closes the window and returns to the in box.
14) Trying to move to a previous message crashes the Outlook application.
Same results with CTRL+P, CTRL+D or Arrow for Previous Message selections.
15) I need to stop playing with Office 2007, since I need to get some work
done and it keeps crashing!

Rick

Hi Rick,

Be sure to also use the 2007 feedback tool from the link below to send screenshots, details of your experiences and suggestions
directly to the MS Office 2007 product team.

The 'blank' dialog for programs to close is one of the 'known issues' for Beta 2. There's a readme file that is installed that
lists these.

The Office Button on the upper left of the screen replaces the 'File' menu choice from earlier versions of Office. Your save as and
print dialog choices are still available from that menu. (Note that Office 2003 shortcuts for menus still work in Office 2007 so
Alt+F will open the File/Office Button menu choice). The Save As choices include a save as PDF option as well.

The Tools=>Options selections are at the bottom of the File/Office Button menu in the ribboned apps.

'Normal View' in Word is still there, it's been renamed 'draft' view and you can make the 'style area pane' display on the left side
of that view visible by using Alt+T,O then Choose Advanced and Display.

The View=>Zoom control is also on the 'View' tab, but the View 'slider' control from the Standard toolbar of prior versions is gone.

In addition to adding commands to the QA Toolbar from the customization dialog in options right clicking on a group title or an
individual icon in the ribbon (except in the Add-ins tab) should let you add to the QAT as well.

My QA Toolbar also has a lot of items on it. It would probably be a nice feature if MS provided a tool to let us see our own usage
data (i.e. when did we add that button to the QA Toolbar, and then how often did we use it after that <g>). Most of the items I
have there relate to a specific series of activities that would have been on a toolbar I could turn on/turn off when needed if I was
in a prior version and a number are there because they're not going to be used on a daily basis, but when they are they're only one
click away :)

This is still a beta version, not even RTM. The rule with betas is to NEVER install
them on your main or production machine unless you can afford "down-time" and have
no concerns about data loss. I hope you at least made a backup of your *.pst!

Beta software is there to test for bugs. It should be installed on a test machine or
a virtual machine that you can reformat. It should not be used to work with
mission-critical files.

Last I looked, this was renamed to "Draft view"

The big, colorful circle at the top left of the Word window is the "file" menu. The
printer dialog box as well as Save As can be reached over this.

Fancier menus are not the only thing that's changed... Adobe is at version 7.0
already, and changed from a template to a COM-Addin. Template Add-ins still function
in Word. I think Adobe is the one forcing you to upgrade, not Microsoft.

In any case, you should be able to save directly to PDF format from the Save As
dialog box, without using your Add-in.

For any more postings on this topic, I advise you to post to an appropriate end-user
group for the application in question. This group is for DEVeloper (= programming)
topics. It's unlikely your musings will be read by those for whom you intend them

Cindy,

Yes, I have lots of backups. Thanks for the concern.

I am sorry you felt I posted in the wrong area. I was looking among a
bewildering array of topic choices and found one which looked like it might
be for developers interested in NEW USERS, the other part of the DEVeloper
NEW USERS discussion thread title. I also felt it might be useful to let
Microsoft know what first impressions I had as a longtime MS Office user who
was experiencing MS Office 2007 for the first time. Any suggestions you may
have about a more appropriate venue would be welcome.

Thanks for the suggestions on some of the new features.

Regards,
Rick

Can you tell me which interface you used to get here? There are a bewildering
number of them... And if the information in the interface you see is
misleading, that should also be passed back to MS :-)

Here's an interface that might be a good place to start. Choose the
*application*, then the group that seems closest to the topic. Stay away from
"Developer" and "Programming" if your question/remark has nothing to do with
writing code :-) (Anytime you see "Developer" it doesn't mean MSFT developers
are here, it means the group is for developers asking questions about doing
things with code)
