There are two separate things going on here. And what's going on depends on whether you have ticked the box at Tools > Options > View > "Windows in Task bar". Just to get you back on the straight and narrow, make sure that box is ticked.
One issue is the size of the Window in which Word resides. To change that, find the blue Word logo at the very top left of the window, just to the left of the name of your document. Click that logo and choose Maximize. If the window already is maximized, then the Maximize option will be greyed out.
The other issue is how you view the document that is running within Word. To change that, use the View menu.
