I can't tell from your description exactly what might be wrong, but
reinstalling v1 won't automatically reattach your old database.
The start-up wizard in v2 does not look for any files. It displays the
BCM databases already attached to its instance sql server.
As far as I know, if you install BCM on a new machine, and you want to
use the mdf file copied from another machine, you will have to attach
the file to sql server manually.
The first use wizard in BCM v3 does scan the BCM directory for
unattached files, which is a welcome feature. I suspect they added that
because of the complications of moving from MSDE to sql 2005. BCM has
never provided support for moving databases between machines except for
export/import.
