Jenny,
Prophet is indeed an excellent alternative to using BCM. It provides all of the advantages of a SQL db add-in to Outlook yet it does not require you to reconstruct and then maintain an entire folder of contacts separate from any folders within your pst. There are no handheld device synch issues with the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 devices because you are always synching from your 1 and only Outlook Contact db. There is an ongoing automatic synchronization that always maintains in the background so you have only 1 contact db always in synch at all times between the SQL db and your pst. Prophet will also work well with exchange. Prophet's greatest strength is its well designed Opportunity Record which is extremely customizable and the heart of all sales activity.
