Opening inserted document via link causes "The following file(s) might still be opened..." error. Grant Robertson <BOGUS[ at ]BOGUS.com> 04.07.2006 14:48:55 Any time I open a document by double-clicking a link that I placed on a OneNote page, close the document, then go to close OneNote, it pops up a warning message saying, "The following file(s) might still be opened outside of OneNote: ...". There are two buttons, [Discard Changes] and [Cancel]. If I don't click on [Discard Changes] then it won't let me exit OneNote. Remember, I said I had closed the file before attempting to exit OneNote. This has me very concerned that I may loose data. It makes me think that, once I have used the "Insert a copy of the file onto the page" option when dragging and dropping a file onto a page, that my file is never really safe again. OneNote should not force me to [Discard Changes] in a document just because I am exiting OneNote. I have also noticed that OneNote actually makes a copy of the file and puts it in my temp folder and then opens that one for editing. What the heck is up with that? It took me a while to accept that inserting a link to a file would copy it from it's original location to the OneNote folders. I got over it and learned to just delete the original in order to only have one copy. You can't have multiple copies of a file spread out all over the place or you will loose track of where you have made what edits. (Not counting backups but you don't edit from backups) I learned to appreciate that the copy of the file in OneNote's _onefiles folder would be moved around with the page or section so the link would always work and the file would always be with the associated section or page. But now I discover that OneNote has actually made YET ANOTHER COPY of the file in my temp folder and is actually editing that one. This means I have that much more chance of loosing my data or getting things mixed up. If OneNote locks up then all my changes, perhaps an entire day's worth, are locked up in some temporary file that may or may not get deleted when OneNote exits. Why does OneNote need to maintain control over this file anyway. This is just one more layer of obstruction that we don't need. Just have OneNote open the file like you would open any other file using Windows Explorer and fuhgedaboudit. Then I know what file I have open and there is no guessing as to whether it will be saved to the correct place. Let me guess, they actually recreate my file out of that darned mega cache file and copy that to the temp folder then open that for editing. I bet you only update the actual file that is in my Notebook folder after I exit OneNote. Or worse, after I have connected back up with the machine where the original is really located. What were you thinking? I don't want my files to be held in limbo like that for so long! Also, what happens to the file lock on the file located in the OneNote _onefiles folder while I am editing that regurgitated version from the cache? Is that still open for others to edit? That's just a disaster waiting to happen. I know OneNote has great sync'ing _for its own files_ but it can't do a granular sync on the other files that are copied into it. OK, OK, I understand that this enables users to open any file that is copied into OneNote regardless of whether they are connected to the computer with the original copy of the file. However, there has got to be some better way to do this so your file isn't held in limbo for so long. For now, I guess I will have to save a copy of my file to my desktop and edit it from there. Then I will have to go through the laborious process of copying that back into the _onefiles folder where it belongs when I am finished with it. I know this is almost exactly what OneNote is doing with the temp folder, but with my way I don't have to worry about the copy with all my modifications in it being automatically deleted by accident. P.S. I have entered this on Connect. I think this one is serious enough to spend the time on.

FWIW I reported this bug. I have always closed the file before exiting OneNote. I have experienced no data loss. Tom S.

Now I make sure not to exit OneNote until I have saved and closed all the files I opened via links in OneNote.
