Synchronizing toolbars and prefs
LeeN 17.07.2006 18:03:02
Group,

I am trying to figure out what ON files contain the configuration settings
so I can copy them (and keep them synched) between two computers.

The configuration settings I am referring to include:
(i) toolbar and menu customizations,
(ii) OneNote option settings
(iii) the current structure/properties of the notebooks, i.e. what
notebooks are open, their order, their color, etc.

I've found the the files "preferences.dat", "toobars.dat" in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote, as
well as a hidden file "OneNote Table of Contents.onetoc2" in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

I assume the toolbar and menu customizatons are stored in "toolbars.dat"?
Where are options settings stored? What about the notebook
structure/properties?

Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks,
Lee

Thanks,
Lee

This has been discussed at length a couple of years ago for ON 2003. Just
search back. For 2007 you will have to hope one of the MVP's knows.

I am using ON 2007. Can any MVPs tell me if the discussion re: ON 2003
applies to ON 2007?

The same two setting files (toolbars.dat and settings.dat) should be able
to be copied between two machines in ON2007.

The path should be identical to that in ON2003, although there may be a
"12" or "2007" interspersed somewhere in either the paths or the
filenames.

Keep in mind this is not a recommended or supported method of moving
settings between two machines, and I would not recommend doing this every
day as you constantly switch between two machines.
