I installed MS Office 2003 Professional, directly from CDs, on our machine which is running WinXP with all current service packs and patches installed, set up with multiple logons for different users. Also installed all Office updates/patches.
Now, when launching Internet Explorer it fires off Windows Installer, apparently trying to install/update some part of MS Office.
I tried the repair/update option of the MS Office install, which did not help. And tried to identify and remove or disable Office components specifed under Tools>Programs> "Internet programs" and Add-ons, to no avail. I also tried looking at the registry and file access, but way too much going on to identify the problem.
Any help would be appreciated, since this is a real pain. Every time I move to a new page in IE, it again starts the Windows Installer.

thats all well and good, but I have a similiar problem with office 2003 on a limited account. it will finish installing whatever it needs but then the next time you use it same problem. If you change to an admin account it doesnt do that. but as soon as you change back it does it again.
Allan responed to my post from the 3rd, I have yet to get any answers to my problem and it sounds like ours might be related, mine is with office 2003, his with IE

I've managed to get this behavior resolved, i.e. when you launch IE you get a message "Preparing to install: Please wait while Windows Configures Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003" which then repeatedly loops forever until you cancel it.
The problem exists in Office since one of the security updates. I got the IE behavior to go away by uninstalling office and reinstalling it. However, the install loop continues to occur when you launch word or excel.
If you change the user account from Limited to Administrator, the problem will go away. If you change it back it will reappear.
I am not aware of any real fix.
