A document stored on an external drive ("thumb disk") from my Apple laptop will not open on my Dell PC. All the other documents stored similarly will open. Help! The Dell uses Word 2003, the Apple uses Word 2004--don't think that can be the problem. The thumb disk was formatted to the PC. I can move documents on it into the laptop hard drive; ditto with the PC (except for this one document). When I try to open this particular document, all I get is two lines of blank squares, with a few letters and numbers scattered among them. Any ideas?

Did you save the document directly to the drive? You probably corrupted the document doing that. Try using File, Open, select the document and use Open and Repair. If that is still corrupt, then it is unrecoverable.
