I'm a UK-based user who recently bought two Dell systems with Office 2003 preloaded. One was activated as normal with the 16-character key. However, with the second system I mistakenly used the same product key instead of the different key on the separate disk that came wit hthe second system. When I tried to activate, I was told that I'd exceeded the number of activations allowed for that key, which is correct (it's single user). The problem: I can't now restart the process and enter the correct key, since it no longer asks for my key when I try to activate Office, and goes straight into the Activation screen, which leads to the above error message. What can i do?

16-character? It's a 25-digit character for Office. Unless the UK version is different.

OEMs use a different product code.

Have you contacted Dell for assistance?

Yes, sorry, I meant 25 character. Can you advise?

Not yet - I felt they would refer me to Microsoft, since the code is on the back of the Microsoft CDs that they delivered with the PC, and the quirk that once one's entered the wrong code it won't accept the right one seems to be an Office issue rather than a Dell one? I know it's my fault for entering the wrong code the first time, but there must surely be a way out. Perhaps deinstalling Office and reinstlaling, though it seems a bit drastic?

Like Milly says - contact Dell. Microsoft will *not* help you with an OEM version. (Of course the OEMs rarely do either but it is their responsibility.
