It looks like the problem has been solved but I don't know why.
I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked. Finally, out of utter frustration, I tried changing the name of the table in the back end that was causing the problem. Voila! everything works fine at least for some limited testing.
I have no idea why. My table names do use underscores, but the new name I just assigned to the problem table also has underscores.
