is there anyone in the USA with cmctl198.chm help file

I've got a number of Access 2002 large Scale DB applications to maintain
that use the ACTIVEX controls in MSCOMCTL.OCX and the help file is no
where to be found. Google searches don't seem to work either. Why didn't
Microsoft include it or at least make it available for download?

Try
http://latium.dpi.ufv.br/downloads/C++IntroductoryEdition/VCB600ENU1/COMMON/HELP/?C=N;O=D

Note that you'll also need cmctl198.chi

Doug,

The help file opens if I go to system32/cmctl198.chm and double click on it
but if I choose Help from the "ListViewCtl Properties" dialog in Access 2002
I get a Windows Help message box that says the .../system32/cmctl198.chm
file isn't a Windows Help file or it is corrupted. Any idea why? It would
just be a lot more convenient. I copied both cmctl198.chm, and the .chi
file to the system32 directory. Is there some thing else to do?

Sorry, no idea. I always just launch it manually.

Stephen,

In case you're still watching your post:

I ran into exactly the same problem - see my posts dated 27/28 August 2006.

Like you, I was unable to get the help system to work for Version 6 of the
Microsoft Windows Common Controls, ie like you, the file cmctl198.chm would
not run. It didn't matter how I tried - Windows Explorer, Object Browser, or
the custom properties dialog for the ActiveX control - help would not
display.

However, I was able to get the help system to work for Version 5 of the
Windows Common Controls. I don't know whether there is much difference
between Versions 5 and 6 but I felt that Help for Version 5 might be better
than nothing at all.

To install Version 5 help you need the following four files from the same
site suggested by Doug Steel:

http://latium.dpi.ufv.br/downloads/C++IntroductoryEdition/VCB600ENU1/COMMON/HELP/?C=N;O=D

comctl1.hlp
comctl1.cnt
vbcmn98.hlp
vmcmn96.cnt

Copy these files to the:
C:\Windows\System 32 folder

You can run either of the two *.hlp files from Windows Explorer.
Alternatively, if you have the Microsoft Windows Common Controls Version 5
installed, you could - but I realise you may not want to - create a
reference in your VBA editor to Microsoft Windows Common Controls Version 5.
Then you could select the ComCtlLib library in Object Browser (F2=shortcut)
to show Version 5 help within the VBA IDE environment. If you used the
Version 5 controls in your application, you could also select the Help
button in a control's custom properties dialog, as this would run the new
help files you downloaded. Well, that's what worked for me.

For more detailed information, see my posts on 27/28 August 2006 to this
newsgroup.

Regards
Geoff
