Disable update of date field
5tac3 20.04.2006 23:51:01
Hello,
I have hundreds of Word documents that have been created and the {date}
field will always change to today's date when those documents are opened. I
also have twenty machines on the network that have Word installed that this
happens on as well. Is there a way to disable Word from updating only the
{date} field in the hundreds of documents so that if the user views or prints
out the document they will see a date from the past and not the current date?

You are using a DATE or TIME field rather than a CREATEDATE field. This
field should be put in the original template if possible (instead of
inserting using the keyboard shortcut or header/footer toolbar button).

In the document in question, press Alt-F9 to display field codes. Then
change the field to a CREATEDATE field, press F9 and then Alt-F9.

See http://addbalance.com/word/datefields1.htm for information on the
different kinds of datefields and how to format them.

Thank you for trying to answer my question Charles. I've sifted through the
FAQs and the links listed in them already and didn't find the answer to my
question. Hence my post. However, I could've missed something. Is there a
more appropriate (managed) newsgroup that I should post this to?

Other than changing the DATE or TIME field to a CREATEDATE field there is no
way to do what you want. Word is doing what you told it to do. If you want
it to do something different, you need to tell it to do something different.
