Continue Numbering From Previous Level
"Puck312" <Jason.Rodrigue[ at ]gmail.com> 24.02.2006 18:45:01
Hi,

I'm trying to work with styles for a numbered outline and am stuck on
one last thing. I am trying to get a numbering scheme like this:

1.0 Style A
1.1 Style B or C
1.1.1 Style D
1.1.2 Style D
1.1.2.1 yadda yadda down to level 9
1.2 Style B or C
1.3 Style B or C
1.3.1 Style D

2.0 Style A
2.1 Style B or C

Basically, there are two different styles that I want to use at level
2, but only include one of the styles in the TOC. Is there any way to
get the level 2 number to increment regardless of whether I use Style B
or Style C? I only need to do this at level 2.

Thanks in advance.
Jason

Yes, Jason:

You can do this with field-based numbering. You cannot do it with
style-based numbering.

Look up LISTNUM fields in the Help. These will do what you want. Read the
bit about the "Level" carefully: you need to ensure that BOTH style B and
Style C are "level 2" because that's how ListNum knows what to do.

Hope this helps

Another (less elegant) way is as follows:-

1. Chose which style, B or C, you want to exclude from the TOC. Lets
assume you only want Style B to be in the TOC. I.e. Style C is to be
excluded. It is important to decide this first, as you cannot easily
change it later on.

2. Make Style B the style that is linked to Level 2 in the
ListTemplate. Do not link Style C to the ListTemplate. Style D
should then follow linked to Level 3.

3. Link Style C to Style B. I.e. in the style "modify" box you can
specify that a style inherits from another style. Make Style C "based
on" Style B. Style C will then inherit Style B numbering.

4. When you create the TOC, in the Table of Contents Options box you
can then remove the number "2" from Style C, so it will not appear in
the TOC. Note that if you remove the number from Style B, both Style B
and C will not appear (given that Style C inherits from Style B, hence
the choice in Point 1).
