Navigation Buttons

I am trying to replace the controls on the navigation bar with custom
buttons.

I have managed to replace them but the new button does not function the
same as the original control.

Example: With the original control, if its function is not availible
then the control is disabled (if you can not "UNDO" then the "UNDO"
control is disabled). With the custom button it is never disabled
whether the function is available or not.

Does anyone have any sudgestions on what I can do to give the custom
buttons the same functionality as the original navigation controls?
