Linked Tables in Access 97
matthewkorchinsky[ at ]gmail.com 01.12.2005 16:45:43
Hello -

I am trying to link tables in Access 97 and I have just installed
Oracle 9i. When I finish installing I attempt to link the tables and
am successful. Then, when I turn the computer off and then back on
again I try to re-link the tables and I get ODBC call failed error but
it won't tell me anything more. I am very new to both of these
products as I have just joined the database world. Any help is
appreciated.

Thanks,
mkorch17

Are you trying to link Access Tables to the Oracle database or Oracle Tables
to an Access database?

If the later and since the Linked Tables normally use the DSN (ODBC) you
need to check the DSN for correct server name, datasource name, client
network interface, username / paswword. mode of authentication. In the DSN
set-up interface, you have a button to test the DSN set-up to see if comms
with the DSN is succesful or not.

If the earlier case, i.e. linking Access Tables to Oracle server / database,
I got no idea as I don't use Oracle. You should post to an Oracle newsgroup
in this case as the Oracle people would be more familiar with this process.

I am trying to connect Oracle tables to an Access database and I have
tried the connection test. Here is what happens. As soon as I finish
installing Oracle on my machine I link the tables fine and I can see
the data, there are no errors. Then I turn off my machine to leave the
office for the day and when I get back in the morning I attempt to link
my Oracle tables in the same Access database (that worked before I
turned off my computer) and it says the connection has failed. No
other error messages. I don't understand why it works before I turn
off the computer. It seems like it suddenly looses the connection with
shut down.

Thanks,
Matt

How did you link the Oracle Tables to Access? ODBC-Linked Tables using a
DSN?

* Have you checked and made sure the the Oracle Server (developer's
version?) is automatically re-started when the PC is turned on?

I don't use Oracle but my guess is that Oracle would be running as a Service
on your PC and a Service can be configured to start manually or
automatically (or disabled).

* Have you tested the DSN as I previously advised?

You should verify that the Oracle-Service and the Listener-
Service for your Oracle database instance are running.
(Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)

We aren't Oracle users: we don't turn off our Oracle
test server.
