New user can't find the database
"Manuel C via AccessMonster.com" <u12297[ at ]uwe> 24.11.2005 01:50:29
I have an unsecured database, split into front and back ends which i recently
created. I have placed the back end in a LAN server and the front end
locally in each PC (about 10 PC's). The program works great if each user
uses only their computer. However, we do not have assigned stations at work
so any user can be on any computer at any time.

The problem i have is that when one user moves to another computer, logs into
Windows and tries to open the database (from a desktop shortcut in the All
Users folders) they get the message "Can't find the database file "C:\path"
Make sure you entered the correct path and file name." The user who was
logged in when the file was installed on the hard drive can open the file but
users who log in after that person can't.

I imagine the problem has something to do with the workgroup file but i'm not
sure what the problem is or how to solve it. I use Access for personal
databases but i am far from been an expert, specially in multiple user
environments.

Thanks for your help,

Manuel C.

The workgroup file should be stored on the server with the BE. What is the
full path to the FE on the C drive?

I recently tried your recommendation Keith, and the problem persisted.

I went back to the original configuration (using default workgroup file
locally, not in the server) and was able to open the database without any
difficulty in a computer running Windows XP and Access 2002.

The other computers are running Windows 2000 and Access 2000.

Is this a problem ?
