You would need to test the precise conditions, but I believe that the Update buttons are only enabled when the schema/solution(i.e., transform) have been installed via an XML Expansion Pack, i.e. using a manifest. When you look at the XML Schema for the Manifest (see the Microsoft Office 2003 Smart Document SDK), you'll see that there are Elements to do with versions, updating etc. You can also test this stuff to some extent by modifying the infomation held for the Schema in the Windows Registry and seeing how Word behaves.
